Miracle #3: 360 joints in the human skeleton

A’isha رضي الله عنه reported Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:

“Everyone has been created with three hundred and sixty Joints. Whoever mentions Allah’s greatness (says Allahu Akbar), praises Allah, extols Allah, and seeks forgiveness from Allah and removes stones from the path of the people, enjoins what is good and forbids the evil to the amount of those three hundred and sixty joints (sulama), he walks on that Day (of Judgment) having distanced himself from the Hellfire.” [Sahih Muslim]

Before 1995, it was thought that there are 340 bones in the human skeleton. However in 1995, a scientific institute proved that the internal ear subsists of 10 joints. Thus, 20 joints were added, and the discovery was made that the human body consists of 360 bones. Scientists have recently concluded that the human body consists of 360 joints a fact that the Prophet (ﷺ) had stated over 1400 years back.

The human being has a composite body which is made up a lot of things but among them, one of the essential element is that it is made up of bones which have numerous joints. According to Scientists that joints exist at the place where bones meet. Joints hold the body together and allow the rigid skeleton to move. Theses joints are broken down into three categories.

The first are those joints which are fixed and allow no movement at all like the skull.

The second are joints which are slightly movable like those between the vertebrate and the spine and only move a small amount.

The third are called synovial joints, and they are movable joints which contain lubricating liquid like the ball and socket in the hip.

Without these joints movement would not be possible and humans would be physically challenged if any of the joints were to get damaged. Thus, the existence of joints is an important aspect of the human body.

Abu Dharr رضي الله ﺗﻌﺎﻟﯽٰ عنه reported that the Prophet (ﷺ) said:

“In the morning, charity is due on every joint bone of the body of everyone of you. Every utterance of Allah’s Glorification (i.e., saying Subhan Allah) is an act of charity, and every utterance of His Praise (i.e., saying Al-hamdu lillah) is an act of charity and every utterance of declaration of His Greatness (i.e., saying La ilaha illAllah) is an act of charity; and enjoining M’aruf (good) is an act of charity, and forbidding Munkar (evil) is an act of charity, and two Rak’ah Duha prayers which one performs in the forenoon is equal to all this (in reward).” [Sahih Muslim]

If we analyze the hadith, it clearly directs Muslims to be grateful to Allah, the Almighty, Who dignifies and honors the man, over all other creatures, by giving him a straight upright skeleton. It has been created with a large number of small and big bones and cartilage. Amid every two bones, we see a joint to empower the bones and to cover the body’s soft parts. These joints empower the person to stand up, sit down, lie on his side, bend, stretch, etc. Every Muslim, who worships God Almighty, must be grateful to him for all these joints without which life would have been impossible.

It is amazing that the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) explained the number of the body joints so accurately, even at that time when no one had any idea about human genetics. Even now in the 21st century, several people still do not know the number of joints in their bodies, along with many professors of orthopedics. But many of them have concluded that indeed there are 360 bones in the human body.

Thus, we can conclude that the Prophet (ﷺ) over 1400 years back did indeed get divine revelations, and it is because of these revelations that statements made at that time are being proved to be true today. Thus, we as Muslims should utilise these joints given to us by God Almighty to worship him and thank him for all his bounties on us.
