Miracle #4: Moon Reflects Light
“It is He who made the sun a shining light and the moon a derived light and determined for it phases – that you may know the number of years and account [of time]. Allah has not created this except in truth. He details the signs for a people who know.” [Surah Yunus: 5]
The moon and its light are essential for life on Earth. The principal purpose is to light up the night when the sun has set. It mirrors the light of the Sun even when it is on the other side of the earth. It is because of the moon that we have different seasons in a year.
It orbits the Earth once a month was making it possible for calendars to be made and in turn, people could plant their crops in the best time of the year. It is because of the moon that we have low and high tides in the ocean. Tides are vital as they clean the ocean shorelines and help ocean current circulating. They benefit man by diluting the sewage water discharged and also assisted in creating electricity.
The moon also has an effect on a human being in the form of astrological signs. Just a point to ponder on is that adult human body is 60% water so if the moon can create high and low tides in the ocean just think what it can do to your body!
In the Quran, Allah Said:
“It is He who made the sun a shining light and the moon a derived light and determined for it phases – that you may know the number of years and account [of time].”
Earlier civilizations believed that the moon derives its light, Anyhow, science now explain that the light of the moon is reflected light. This statement made in the Quran accurately mentioned 1400 years ago that the moonlight is reflected from the sun, and no one was aware of this knowledge hence indeed a miracle of the Quran.
The Quran has not made any comments about the sources of these lights here. It only says that (for you human beings) he made the sun a radiant and the moon luminous. This is the statement of a fact. The Quran isn’t a book of science and does not make scientific statements. It makes statements that are true from our point of view.
“It is not for the sun to overtake the moon, nor does the night outstrip the day. They all float, each in an orbit.” [Surah Yasin: 40]
There is clear mention in the above statement by God Almighty of orbits of Sun and Moon, which is in conformity with the scientific evidence of movement of cosmic bodies. The Moon motion at a pace of 18 kilometers although the speed of Sun is 12 kilometers per second. With slower speed the Sun can’t outdo Moon. These developments are very decisive and sleek so as to keep their orbits, speed, and position. This is profoundly refined system command by Allah to keep orderliness.
وَمِن رَّحْمَتِهِ جَعَلَ لَكُمُ اللَّيْلَ وَالنَّهَارَ لِتَسْكُنُوا فِيهِ
“It is out of His Mercy that He has put for you night and day, that you may rest therein (i.e. during the night) and that you may seek of His Bounty (i.e. during the day), and in order that you may be grateful.” [Surah Qasas : 73]
Lastly, I would like to add that God Almighty created the creatures on earth to live by the day and night. Some plants and even parts of this earth have very long day’s cycles and night cycles. Typical life on the planet earth was created by an equal rotation of the day and night. So this is the divine plan of God Almighty that he settled the moon to be our night-light and for the sun to be the glorious daylight.
