Miracle #5: Big Bang in the Quran
An American astronomer in 1912 observed that the distant galaxies are moving away from earth, this means they must have been closer together in the past. If we extrapolate back we find that they all must have been on top of each other about 13.7 billion years ago. This was the big bang the beginning of the universe. The Quran says that on the very first day of creation, God Almighty made the heavens, and the Earth meshed together, tight and compact, continues to expand it into the universe we know today. God Almighty in this verse explained the Big Bang, which is truly a miracle.
The Big Bang theory is a theory that tries to explain how the universe came into existence. Science says that there was a Big Bang 13.7 billion years ago which created the world and is still expanding today. Billions of years from now it may collapse by its gravity with a Big Crunch. In the Quran, God Almighty stated this fact over 1400 years ago.
For thousands of years, astronomers struggled with fundamental questions concerning the universe. Until the early 1920’s, it was believed that the universe had always been in existence and also that the diameter of the world was settled and not changing. Anyhow, in 1912, the American astronomer, Vesto Slipher, made a discovery that would soon change scientists’ assumptions about the world. Slipher observed that the galaxies were moving away from earth at tremendous velocities.
These observations provided the first evidence supporting the expanding-universe theory. In 1916, Albert Einstein devised his Generic Theory of Relativity that point out that or earth must be either thickening or shrinking. Acceptance of the expanding-universe theory indeed came in 1929 by the renowned American astronomer Edwin Hubble.
Astonishingly well before telescopes were even created and well before Hubble presented his Law, Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم used to recite a verse of a Quran to his companions that declared that our universe is expanding. Allah Said:
“And the heaven We created with might, and indeed, We are (its) expander.” [Surat Adh-Dhariyat : 47]
At the time of divination of the Quran, the word “space” was not known, and people used the word “heaven” to cite to what lies above the Earth. In the above verse, the word “heaven” is implying to space and the known universe. The verse explains that space, and thus the universe, happens to be widened, just as Hubble’s Law states.
The Quran mentioned such a fact centuries before the invention of the first telescope and at a time when there was fundamental knowledge in science is considered remarkable. This is more so considering that as many people in his time happened to be uneducated and naturally could not have been aware of such facts.
Another aspect to look into is the picture of the ‘Cat Eye Nebula’ which was taken by the Hubble telescope on September 18th, 1994.
It shows an exploding star 3000 light years away. When we observe the picture, we see it is red and resembles that of a rose. The Quran in Surat ar-Rahman states,
فَإِذَا ٱنشَقَّتِ ٱلسَّمَآءُ فَكَانَتْ وَرْدَةً كَٱلدِّهَانِ
“When the sky is torn apart, so it was (like) a red rose, like ointment.” [Surat Ar-Rahman: 37]
The fact that the Quran knew 1,400 years ago that when a star explodes, it is like an oily red rose is indeed a miracle, and it is amazing with regards to how accurately the Quran describes these events.
With the establishment of the Big Bang theory, it soon turns out to Muslim professors that Bing Bang Theory go hand in hand with the formation of the world in verse 30 of chapter 21 of the Quran. The theory indicates that all the matter in our universe came into being from one simple very hot and dense point; that burst and generate the beginning of the world, matches what is quoted in the verse that the heaven and Earth were once joined, and then split apart. Allah Said:
“Then He directed Himself to the heaven while it was smoke and said to it and to the earth, “Come [into being], willingly or by compulsion.” They said, “We have come willingly.” [Surat Fussilat: 11]
Once again, the possible explanation is that Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم had indeed received divine revelation from God Almighty, The maker, and designer of the universe.
