What is the significance of Muharram in Islam?
Muharram is the very first month of Islamic calendar that refers to “forbidden”. Though the perception of Sunni Muslims and the misguided Shia differs in terms of the importance of this day, both the groups held fast in the 10th day of Muharram often termed as ‘Ashura‘. According to the beliefs of Sunni, on the 10th of Muharram, Musa and his entire group gained victory against the Egyptian Pharaoh. In the remembrance of this victory, Sunni held fast. On the other hand, Shia Muslims commemorate the death and sacrifice of Imam Husain and the family.
Husain ibn Ali is the son of Amir-al Mumineen who went to Karbala, Iraq along with 72 members and family. The group of rivals tormented the son of Ali for no reason and killed the entire group. As per the historical records, from the 7th day of Muharram, Yazid restricted water on ‘Ehle bait (Prophet Mohammed SAW family members)’ and assaulted the same during Ashura. This war is commonly known as the battle of Karbala in which the women, children, and the old-aged people were deprived of food and water. The people survived in this battle were taken to Damascus and were imprisoned.
The misguided Shia commences mourning from the inception of this month and sustains the same till 10th of Muharram. They are also necessitated to read the Ziyarat book that describes the entire journey of Imam Husain. The book dates back to 1400 years ago after the death of Ali when Husain along with 72 members was martyred. Apart from this, the Shia Muslims pray and send the peace to the Prophet Mohammed and his family. Most of the Sufi Muslims also held fast during this day though some do the same in the remembrance of Imam Husain while others for the victory of Musa.
