A guide to performing Umrah

Umrah is one of the essential pilgrimages of Muslims that is often termed as-Sunnah of Prophet Mohammed . The steps of practising Umrah are:

  • Wear Ihram and make intention – before commencing the journey of Umrah, the pilgrim has to undergo the state of Ihram before passing through the Meeqat boundaries. Ihram is two piece of white-coloured garment that is especially considered as the outfit for Umrah and Hajj. After this, the pilgrims should make an intention to practice Umrah by reciting ‘Labbaik Umrah’ and chant Talbiyah unless you begin Tawaf around Kaaba.
  • Tawaf – after getting access to Masjid al-Haram, the initial step is to reach Kaaba and touch or kiss Hajre Aswad before beginning Tawaf. Tawaf is the process of taking seven rounds around Kaaba i.e., the first three at a hurried pace and the last four at a leisurely pace. After accomplishing each round, the pilgrims face Hajre Aswad and raise their hand towards the same pronouncing Allahu Akbar.
  • Maqame Ibrahim – after finishing the seven circuits, pilgrims proceed to Maqame Ibrahim and pray two Ra’khas of Nafl in the same spot. It is advisable to recite Surah Al-Kafiroon in the first Ra’kha following Surah al-Ikhlaas in the latter.
  • Drink ZamZam water – Muslims then go to the sacred well of Abe Zamzam and drink the holy water and pour it over their body. They then again move to Hajre Aswad and kiss the stone, however, it is not mandatory the pilgrims can alternatively proceed to Sa’i.
  • Sa’I – the pilgrims then proceed to Safa and Marwah and run back and forth in the same hills for seven times. Men pilgrims have to proceed at a hurried pace in the green markers.
  • Shaving head – Sa’i is the last step of Umrah pilgrimage after which pilgrims have to either trim or shave their heads. With this, the Umrah rites of the pilgrim get accomplished.
