Practicing Tawaf in Hajj and Umrah

Hajj Tawaf or Umrah Tawaf is the first basic rites of Hajj and Umrah pilgrimage. It refers to the seven circuits taken around Ka’bah. According to the famous scholars, one should commence Tawaf only after touching and kissing Hajre Aswad (the black stone positioned at Kaaba). Apart from this, people are also entitled to raise their hands in the direction of Hajre Aswad and pronounce Allahu Akbar. It is mandatory for the pilgrims to practice the Umrah Tawaf of arrival no matter if he/she resides in Mecca or belongs to other corners of the world. Some of the major obligatory parts associated with Tawaf are:

  • The pilgrims must follow cleanliness and purity while opting for Tawaf. Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him) said that if the Pilgrim breaks ‘Wudu’ while practising the tawaf, they are necessitated to get purified again and begin with the starting point and position.
  • The pilgrims must ensure that they should face the black stone while practising Tawaf as the circuits would be considered as invalid if they have no access to the black stone.
  • It is obligatory for the men pilgrims to take the initial 3 rounds following hurried pace and then the rest 4 at a leisurely pace. Moreover, the Hajj Tawaf has to be commenced from the mark of black stone and should be concluded at the same spot.
  • If someone skips or forgets a round then he is permitted to return and take it unless he has not broken the ‘Wudu’. However, if the pilgrim does not remember to take the missed Tawaf for a long time then the same would be termed as invalid.

After the completion of seven rounds of Ka’bah, both the men and women pilgrims pray two Ra’kha of Nafl and proceed to the palace of Ibrahim i.e., Safa and Marwa. At that point, they run back and forth in these hills to commemorate the struggles of Ibrahim’s wife.
