0Maqbaratul Baqi (Baqee)
Jannat ul Baqi or Baqee (paradise of land or garden of land) was once in the past known as Baqi al Gharqad (land of Gharqad) because of thorny bushes Gharqad. This place was chosen by Prophet ﷺ to be graveyard for Muslims in Madinah. This place is near Masjid Nabwi and Roza Rasool.
This place was given the status of main graveyards of Madinah for Muslims right after migration when an ansari sahaba As ‘ad Bin Zararah assed away. He was the first one to be buried here from Ansar, and Uthman bin Maz’oon was the first from Muhajir Sahaba, and was foster brother of Prophet ﷺ.
At first there used to be a Jewish graveyard behind Jannat ul- Baqee. Hazrat Uthman bin Affan was buried, in this Jewish graveyard. When Muawiyyah, first Umayyad Caliph, took charge he expanded baqi in order to honor Uthman bin Affan and merged the huge Jewish graveyard in baqi, and built the first dome over the grave of Uthman bin Affan.
This dome and many others in baqi, maula in Makkah, and other shrines in and around Makkah and Madina were demolished under the reign of King ibn Saud in 1344 A.H.
Several family members of Prophet ﷺ, several thousands of his sahaba and many other noble and high prestige Muslims are buried here.
