…for those who are Muwahid

The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

لكل نبي دعوة مستجابة وإني اختبأت دعوتي شفاعة لأمتي وهي نائلة إن شاء الله من مات منهم لا يشرك بالله شيئا

“Every Prophet’s du’a is answered and I concealed my du’a for the (attainment of) intercession of my Ummah by the Will of Allaah, for those who died without associating anything (committing shirk) with Allaah.”

[Sunan At-Tirmidhi; classed as ‘hasan saheeh’ by Tirmidhi]
Explanation from ”Tuhfa al-Ahwadi bi Sharh Jaami’ al-Tirmidhi” (attached)

1. Allaah سبحانه و تعالى Says:

“Who is he that can intercede with Him except with His Permission?” [Al-Baqarah: 255]

2. Allaah سبحانه و تعالى Says:

“On that Day, intercession will be useless except from those to whom the Lord of Mercy has granted permission and whose words He approves.” [ TaHa:109]

3. Allaah سبحانه و تعالى Says:

“They cannot intercede without His permission – indeed they themselves stand in awe of Him.” [Al-Anbiya’: 28]

4. Allaah سبحانه و تعالى Says:

“There are many angels in heaven whose intercession will be of no use until Allaah gives permission to those He will, whose words He approves.” [translation of Al-Najm: 26]

5. The greatest intercession from creation is ‘al-Maqaam al-Mahmood’ which will be given to the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم, which all generations will ask the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم to intercede for them with their Lord so that He might relieve them of the horrors of the Day of Judgement.

6. The Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

“Every prophet was given du’a and he made that du’a, but I saved my du’a for the intercession of my Ummah. Anyone who dies without committing Shirk will receive my intercession.” [Bukhari, 8/33 and Muslim, 1/170]

7. The Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

“Allaah Almighty gave me the choice of either intercession or taking half my Ummah into Jannah. I chose intercession, for it is that which will be of more use and need. Do you think that my intercession is for those who are (pure) Muslims? No, but my intercession is for those covered in sin and wrong.”[Musnad Ahmad; Ibn Majah]

8. The Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

“I am given five special gifts and I am given the Intercession. I have saved it for my Ummah for those who do not associate anyone with Allaah.”[Musnad Ahmad, 1/301]

9. The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

“My intercession will be for those among my ummah who committed major sins (without shirk).” [At-Tirmidhi; Ibn Khuzaymah and Ibn Maajah]

10. The conditions (taken from the texts) for intercession are:

–     The permission of Allaah to the intercessor to intercede.
–     Allaah’s being pleased with the intercessor.
–     Allaah’s being pleased with the one for whom intercession is made.

With regard to the kind of intercession that will be rejected, this is intercession that does not meet the conditions required of permission from Allaah or His being pleased with the intercessor or the one for whom intercession is made).

11. Imam Qurtubi said in his Tafseer:

ومن ارتضاه الله شفاعة هم الموحّدون؛ بدليل قوله : لَّا يَمْلِكُونَ الشَّفَاعَةَ إِلَّا مَنِ اتَّخَذَ عِندَ الرَّحْمَـٰنِ عَهْدًا

“Intercession is chosen by Allaah for those who are Muwahidoon (upon true Tawheed), indicated by the saying (of Allaah): ‘None shall have the power of intercession, but such a one as has received permission from the Most Gracious.’” [Maryam: 87]

His succinct explanation found HERE

The fact that the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم will have the highest station (of intercession) from the creation; and some amongst the believers will also be allowed to intercede, does not change the fact that granting or rejection of shifa’ is conditional to Allaah’s Will and Mercy.

May Allaah make us amongst the true Muwahidoon who reject shirk in all their affairs, as much as they desire Allaah’s Mercy and the shifa’ of His Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم on the Day of Judgement.
